Erection of purpose built student accommodation

Planning permission for a 326 bed new-build student housing scheme in York.

In conjunction with York City Council, the clients assembled a site for redevelopment to accommodate a high specification student housing scheme. The scheme brought back into beneficial use a poor quality piece of brownfield land on the edge of the city centre.

The scheme required the redevelopment of an area of employment land and a change of use to residential.  Demonstrating the lack of demand for such facilities was central to our success, as well as increasing demand for student accommodation in York.

Working closely with the local authority established a robust evidence base that supported the proposal, and to ensure that the design was sensitive to the historic context of York Minster and local residents.

As a result of close collaboration with the local authority, including constructive pre-application meetings, planning permission was secured unanimously at committee in accordance with the build programme required to meet market demand.  The site was sold to the McLaren Group in January 2015.
